چکیده
Background Potential late effects of treatment for childhood cancer include adiposity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. These risk factors cluster together as metabolic syndrome increase the development diabetes mellitus cardio- cerebrovascular disease. Knowledge on factors, timely diagnosis, preventive strategies is importance to prevent complications improve quality life. Currently, no national cohort studies prevalence determinants in survivors, including biomarkers genetic predisposition, are available. The metabolic syndrome and body composition in childhood cancer survivors
PURPOSE Long-term survivors of childhood cancer appear to have an increased risk for the metabolic syndrome, subsequent type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in adulthood compared to healthy children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of the metabolic syndrome and associated factors in childhood cancer survivors at a single center in Korea. METHODS We performed a...
متن کاملApproach to metabolic syndrome in childhood cancer survivors.
The combined effects of optimized chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, stem cell transplantation regimens, and improved supportive care had drastically increased the survival rate of childhood cancer. Hence, the number of adult survivors of childhood cancer is on the raise and this subset of population is gaining more attention due to the late effects of their cancer therapy. There is growing e...
متن کاملMetabolic syndrome induced by anticancer treatment in childhood cancer survivors
The number of childhood cancer survivors is increasing as survival rates improve. However, complications after treatment have not received much attention, particularly metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome comprises central obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance, and cancer survivors have higher risks of cardiovascular events compared with the general population. The mecha...
متن کاملPregnancy outcomes among adult survivors of childhood cancer in the British Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.
PURPOSE We used data from the first large-scale overwhelmingly population-based study (a) to quantify the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in survivors of childhood cancer in relation to cancer type and treatment and (b) to assess live birth rates relative to the general population. METHODS A questionnaire, including questions inquiring about pregnancy outcomes, was completed by 10,483 surv...
متن کاملComponents of the metabolic syndrome in 500 adult long-term survivors of childhood cancer.
BACKGROUND Adult survivors of childhood cancer have been reported to have an increased risk of late sequels. A cluster of abnormalities that contribute to the metabolic syndrome may be expressed at a higher level and therefore result in an increased risk for diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS We investigated a single-centre cohort of 500 adult survivors (228 f...
